So this face right here is why despite the fact that he is the youngest actor to portray the Doctor, Matt Smith’s Eleven is unquestionably the oldest incarnation of the Doctor.
That is an old man’s expression. That is a look filled with a thousand years worth of regret and pain and strength to carry on in spite of it all.
Matt Smith is incredibly gifted and we are so lucky to have him.
I completely agree with all of the above.
I think another moment where it really shows is when he’s at Amy’s bed side and he’s the poster Time Lord for “The sad man with a box” and telling her about how he stole the box and says “Silly me, silly old Doctor…” It’s there; age and past and knowledge of the universe.
And let’s not forget in the Christmas Special when he utters the line “Better a broken heart than no heart at all” because that’s just so Doctor. His hearts get broken — stabbed, torn apart, stepped on, etc, etc — but to him it’s worth it and he’s still got hope and knows that knowing his companions and experiencing everything he has and will experience is better than just not doing anything of importance. It makes him happy or content even when he’s sad.
So, that line was a bit of a call out for well, his past and his life and everyone he’s ever met or traveled with and it’s absolutely brilliant and one of the many reasons why I adore Eleven.
